Crime and Punishment

How very fortunate that our very first entry on this blog should concern that great American dog killer M. Vick. Using the American justice system to his ultimate advantage, Mr. Vick has negotiated a plea bargain whereby he might receive about one year in prison. And I’m sure it will be the Paris Hilton type of prison not one fit for the dog himself.

And then the NFL is trying to look tough on this matter and give Vick an “indefinite” suspension. How wimpy! Even the smallest dictionary gives “indefinite” a vague definition. Hell, Vick could be back playing football the day after his spiritless jail sentence has been served.

But what’s most disturbing about all this is the functioning of our justice system. Where the hell is the “make the punishment fit the crime” philosophy? Vick should be sentenced to a lifetime of cleaning kennels at the Humane Society. Or perhaps, to reduce his sentence, just make him clean each and every Humane Society kennel in the U.S. one time – at his own expense. If he’s got enough money to operate a dog killing business, he should be able to pay his way around the country to clean kennels.
